Fire Prevention Week™ (FPW™) is October 6-12, 2024. This year’s FPW campaign, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!™” strives to educate everyone about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home.
Working smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by more than 50 percent! According to statistics provided by the NFPA, more than one-third (38 percent) of home fire deaths result from fires in which no smoke alarms are present or do not function properly.
Be sure to follow these guidelines to make smoke alarms work for you and your family! ✔️Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (such as the hallway), and on each level of the home (including the basement). ✔️Make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities. ✔️Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button. ✔️Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or don’t respond when tested.
